Effective Cleaning of Bathroom Tile and Grout

The bathroom is one of the most frequented rooms and the tile and grout can get pretty dirty. Cleaning the bathroom is a tedious task that most people dread like the plague. Our busy modern life leaves us no time to keep up with cleaning the bathroom tiles and grout.   

As the dirt and grime in the bathroom build up, we assume and hope that somebody else will take up the responsibility and clean it. (Obviously, there are more important things to be done!) Without regular cleaning, the tiles will be covered by a hazy film of body oils and soap scum making the color and luster dull. Mold and mildew begins to attack the grout lines staining and darkening them.

Since no one has come with an app for automatic tile and grout cleaning let us share a few cleaning tips on how to keep up with this tiresome task.

There are quick and easy ways to get rid of stains, mold, and mildew. You don’t even need any specially formulated commercial cleaners simply prepare your homemade cleaning solution from readily available ingredients.

Homemade cleaning solution

Pour half a cup of ammonia, another half a cup of bakcleaning bathroom tile grouting soda to one gallon of warm water. Stir the mixture and fill it in a spray bottle. Spray the floor in sections scrub gently and mop off the rinse thoroughly with clean water to ensure no residue is left.

For stained grout apply a thick paste of baking soda and water on a toothbrush or any small brush and use it to scrub the grout lines gently until the mixture completely foams. Finally, rinse with clean water to see the results.

Don’t use any other cleaning solution on the tile until all the ammonia is completely rinsed off.

Cleaning Mold and Mildew

Bleach is one of the most powerful solutions against mold and mildew. Nonetheless, when using chlorine bleach you must take caution to avoid spraying it on fabric, carpet or metal causing damage.

Prepare a cleaning solution by pouring two cups of bleach and 1 tablespoon of dishwashing detergent to two cups of warm water. Stir the mixture and start removing the mold and mildew by scrubbing with a brush. Fill a spray bottle with the cleaning solution, spray it directly on the mold and mildew and let it sit for 15mins. Rinse off with warm water and wipe off any remaining debris.

Stubborn Mold and Mildew Stains

If the mold and mildew won’t come off easily then you need extra bleaching power. Spray concentrated bleach on the mold and mildew and allow it to sit for approximately 15mins. Scrub gently, rinse then finally wipe dry. There are other commercial cleaning solutions for removing mold and mildew in the market that you can try.

It could be impossible to scrub or bleach out the mold and mildew if they have penetrated deep into the grout. The only solution would be to hire a renovation expert to grind off the damaged grout, regrout and finally seal.

Warning: Don’t mix bleach and ammonia the reaction produces toxic gasses that are harmful to health.

A moist and very humid environment is an ideal for the growth of mold and mildew.

The professional janitorial services in Winnipeg recommend applying a waterproof grout sealer or silicone waterproofing to your grout to prevent mold and mildew from permeating into the grout. Ensure you reapply the grout at least twice in a year.
